The Senior IT Business Analyst is responsible for learning and performing a full range of activities, which ensure a high level of transparency between the department’s Software Development group and end-users in other business units. Using a variety of tools and techniques to provide cost effective business systems and applications analysis in support of the development and implementation of business applications. Includes evaluation, analysis, documentation requirements, translation into proper system requirement specifications and configuration. Formulates and defines systems scope and objectives based on both end-user needs and a thorough understanding of business systems, applications and industry requirements.  Operates as a liaison between technical personnel and the appropriate end-user department. Evaluates and translates end-user needs and problems to technical associates and/or vendors where appropriate. Understands the business implications of technical solutions, and assists in defining and documenting the technology solutions to support any future business needs. Teaches end-users new technology and enhancements using all appropriate communication tools as well as providing support for existing system.


Essential Functions:

  • Application Development & Testing:
    • Collaborates with functional leaders to review current project activities, prioritization of work, communicate status and escalate business-related issues.
    • Participates in the design, testing and documentation of new or existing applications, which includes upgrades, enhancements and hot fixes, to thoroughly understand business needs and ensure comprehensive testing scenarios are documented.
    • Seeks ways to apply business technology to business processes, researching and providing information on technical trends and practices.
    • Establishes cost and time estimates for development / implementation of projects.
    • Develops, maintains and executes test cases, ensuring the quality and stability of the system throughout the project.
    • Analyzes business and user needs, documenting requirements and revising existing system logic difficulties.
    • Testing of projects in accordance with written business and functional design documents and following established standard
    • Analyzes complex problems and researches the application for root cause and potential solution.
    • Ensures execution and delivery fully aligns with functional imperatives.
    • Works on problems of complex and diverse scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.
    • Exercises judgement to determine appropriate action.
    • Creates deliverables in a timely manner and uses project management to communicate progress.
    • Responsible for delivering assignments within specified time frames, adhering to all established methodologies, standards and guidelines individually or as a lead member of a project team.
    • Reports, monitors and verifies application project defects, as necessary. Ensures that defects in the software products have been corrected and documents results of testing.
    • Provides ownership and accountability for assigned testing, keeping supervisor aware of progress and risk.
    • Critically evaluates all information gathered and composes it into a detailed specification for developer use and client sign-off.
    • Acts as a liaison to developers.
    • Documents testing and technical applications to maximize user understanding.
    • Performs and verifies database updates, as applicable, and gets them moved across all environments.
    • Documents business rules/financial requirements to support system enhancements.
    • Ensures that documentation is updated when change requests are approved for a project.
    • Facilitates and takes the point on communication (triage, manage) to multiple resources that allow deployment of business analytics tools.


  • Training & Education:
    • Creates communication plans (correspondence, presentations and other materials) for knowledge transfer to end-users and business.
    • Works with the training team to develop application-specific training documents.
    • Maintains professional/technical knowledge by reading professional publications and attending continuing education seminars and classes.
    • Is autonomous in learning new software tools that enable business analytics and process improvement projects to be developed.
    • Coaches, motivates and guides team members





  • End-User Support:
    • Enhances communication and improves customer service between IT and the business. Keeps the business area informed of upcoming IT changes and new directions.
    • Responds to end-user inquiries involving application questions.
    • Guides end-users through complex application functionality.
    • Interacts with clients, both internal and external, to supply information.
    • Communicates proactively and effectively with team members, team leads, project managers, software developers, user personnel and management staff.
    • Works independently with users to define concepts and fundamental functional requirements.
    • Works with end-users to define and analyze problems and align the most appropriate technical, application or configuration solutions.
    • Works with the end-user to select or create appropriate scenarios to test all results to determine whether system changes met project specifications; uses scenarios to assist the end-user in acceptance testing.
    • Provides timely response to technical questions and problems related to codes, databases and processes in the system. Takes corrective action or refers the issues to the appropriate resource as necessary.
    • Resolves internal and external client dissatisfactions by initiating a thorough investigation of complaint, evaluates findings, and responds to client(s) in a timely manner.
    • Provides after-hour support of IT users as assigned.
    • Works with laboratory staff to facilitate deployment of informatics tools which allow operational visibility, improvement of processes, reduction of cost of poor quality, etc.
    • Becomes intimately familiar with processes of laboratory in order to better deliver informatics tools and information to necessary personnel.


  • Special Projects:
    • Participate in process improvement projects.



  • Ability to develop business relationships and communicate effectively with the user community, peers and supervisors.
  • Applies advanced knowledge of processes and resources required to perform analytical and technical tasks on PC systems.
  • Experience producing progress reports.
  • Solid ability to use data and logic to quickly find solutions to difficult challenges.
  • Adheres to schedules and agendas and respects others’ time.
  • Adjusts effectively to new work demands, processes, structures and cultures.
  • Possesses an understanding in the areas of clinical, anatomic pathology and/or cytology.


Other Functions:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.




  • High School Diploma/GED and 6+ years’ experience.
  • Minimum of 6 years direct experience assisting with documenting business requirements for healthcare facilities and developing/performing/executing test cases.
  • Solid knowledge of system development methodology, project management, system architecture, and analytical/problem solving skills.
  • Must have knowledge how to effectively write Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Must be able to balance high quality standards with schedule pressures and demanding environment.
  • Must be a resourceful self-starter, flexible, pro-active, solution-oriented and customer-oriented.
  • Able to work in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint



  • Some college or technical school course work related to the Information Technology field a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field preferred.
