Overview

The Senior IT Database Analyst serves in a key role as a subject matter expert in the laboratory information system (LIS) and will act as a voice for the laboratory when determining how to best serve the current laboratory business needs. Responsible for defining and maintaining core components in one or more applications and will ensure that software functionality meets the business needs. This role supports databases in various environments. Installs, configures, plans and maintains systems. Develops and administers company reporting and data extraction requirements. Designs and implements database security policies and procedures, ensures accuracy and availability of data and conducts performance tuning on relational databases and servers.  Evaluates new database technologies and tools, sets database system and programming standards, applies database technology to business problems and manages the development and production database environments with emphasis on security, availability and performance.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Database Procedures:
    • Primary contact person for resolution of software and database issues.
    • Troubleshoots an issue from start to finish and draws on a broad knowledgebase that includes software functionality, system capabilities, as well as database file structure.
    • Communicates with developers and project coordinators across departments with a clear communication channel to determine proper requirements for laboratory functionality.
    • Develops technical, structural, and organizational specifications, which may include such elements as access methods, access time, job control language, statistical methodologies, device allocation, validation checks, protection and security.
    • Utilizes knowledge expertise to train analysts with software functionality and provide direction for problem solving.
    • Oversees the development, testing and implementation of the technical solutions and validate the final product so that it meets the business requirements as it applies to database definition and software functionality.
    • Designs, plans, and implements most aspects of database management and may begin to specialize in one aspect of database management such as data administration, web connectivity, physical structure, logical design, SQL and SQL applications or overall architecture and database analysis.
    • Supports all database administration areas and applies advanced knowledge of at least one area.
    • Diagnoses, resolves and implements preventive measures to prevent problems for applications and system software.
    • Designs data storage and management processes for specific data warehouse projects.
    • Recommends and oversees implementation of system level configuration modifications to optimize performance.
    • Ensures maintenance of physical integrity of all production databases.
    • Sets quality standards relative to all aspects of database management.
    • Provides database development/ project support in compliance with database design standards.
    • Provides guidance on best practices and standards and supports the project teams with database related activities throughout the software development lifecycle.
    • Participates in prototyping and proof of concept system development and benchmarking.
    • Contributes to the establishment and use of best practices for database development programming.
    • Provides insight into the building of database architecture and leading technologies.
    • Champions the adoption of new technologies for data warehousing.

 

  • Testing:
    • Collaborates with other departments to validate database changes and functionality.
    • Works with QA/QC to ensure all quality control standards are met satisfactorily with any database change.
    • Creates and enforces test plans as assigned to ensure complete and accurate testing of new functionality of laboratory functionality.

 

  • Business Needs Assessment:
    • Point of contact for any issue, project or collaboration.
    • Determines business needs and provides technical solutions to meet those needs based on the current functionality of the application.
    • Reviews technical documentation, user manuals and system specifications to ensure accuracy for end users.
    • Acts as project manager and liaison to other departments for large scale issues involving multiple facets of the laboratory where database is involved.
    • Interacts interdepartmentally and across SHUSA IT to assist with the standardization of database procedures and policies.
    • Interacts across departments to ensure the laboratory information system is meeting business requirements as well as federal and state compliance requirements.
    • Evaluates and recommends the purchase and utilization of software products to assist in the management of data.
    • Evaluates and recommends the purchase and utilization of technologies such as servers, extract and conditioning tools, metadata management, security tools and archival and recovery tools and data access.
    • Identifies opportunities in database arena to address future business challenges or identify process improvements.
    • Plans and implements backup and recovery for all relevant applications.
    • Monitors technology industry trends and directions of database development.

 

  • Special Projects:
    • Participate in process improvement projects.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Associate’s degree in Information Technology or work related to the Information Technology field.
  • 5 years’ experience in Information Technology (IT) within the healthcare industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance high quality standards with schedule pressures and demanding environment.
  • Expert knowledge of system development methodology, project management, system architecture an analytical/problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance high quality standards with schedule pressures and demanding environment.
  • Must be a resourceful self-starter, flexible, pro-active, solution-oriented and customer-oriented.

 

Preferred

  • Healthcare background.
  • Experience with a laboratory information system.

 

Additional Information

Physical Capabilities:
- Light to moderate physical effort (lift/carry up to 50 lbs.)
- Occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and crouching.
