Overview

The Software Developer I participates in managing the solution development process from feasibility study to implementation.  Assists in the delivery of appropriate software solutions to build Data Integration, enable Data Analysis and Business Intelligence. Analyzes business requirements/processes and system integration considerations to determine appropriate technology solutions for internal and external customers. Designs, evaluates, codes, configures, tests and documents applications based on system and user requirements. Using current programming language and technologies, writes code, completes programming, and performs testing and debugging of applications.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Software Development:
    • Develops new applications or enhancements to existing proprietary software applications.
    • Applies SDLC process with regards to design, ensuring proper functionality, stability, and data integrity of all code
    • Delivers clearly documented code as expressed in the requirements of the SDLC process.
    • Follows corporate standards for naming conventions, development practices and code library maintenance (SPOCK and V/cm)
    • Ensures that all data communications are secure as required by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996.
    • Develops and delivers functionality that is error free and within the timelines of the project.
    • Applies Test Driven Development (TDD) practices to compose unit and integration tests, ensuring proper functionality, stability, and data integrity of all code.
    • Delivers clearly documented, error-free code as required to meet requirements expressed in assigned Features and Defects.
    • Provides thorough documentation of development work performed against all Features and Defect items, using the tools provided in the OnTime project management application.
    • Collaborates with peers and key stakeholders to create conceptual designs for new software applications and upgrades to existing software applications.

 

  • Planning & Design:
    • Collaborates with peers to review conceptual designs for new functionality or enhancements to existing applications.
    • Reviews database requirements with requested software modifications or enhancements.
    • Reviews technical considerations with requested software modifications or enhancements.
    • Works within the team to gain knowledge of application functionality.
    • Project assignments tend to be of narrower focus, smaller scale and/or involve primarily database administration vs development.
    • Participates in the planning and design of proprietary software applications alongside the mentorship of a senior developer.
    • Works with peers to specify core application architecture, user interface designs, database requirements, and other technical considerations.
  • Collaborate with peers to assign complexity and reasonable time lines to features.

 

  • Support & Maintenance:
    • Works towards taking corrective measures to resolve any errors or flaws in existing functionality.
    • Works towards delivering clear communication and documentation for all Support tickets assigned or worked.
    • Documents request and incident in IT ticketing and tracking system.
    • Strives to meet the expectations of our customers.
    • Under the guidance of the Program Lead, participates in enhancing system performance, preparing standard operating procedures, system documentation, optimizing database maintenance and configuring hardware specifications for core systems.
    • Receives and completes maintenance-related updates as assigned by the project manager.
    • Provides immediate response to technical questions and problems related hardware, network, and application related issues.
    • Maintains the equipment and devices used by the systems to the satisfaction of the clients. Follows up on all problems associated with the output and prints to the clients.
    • Performs operation maintenance on the mission critical systems (i.e., backup, cleaning, etc.)
    • Maintain hardware, software inventory and accurate documentation.
    • Assists in project, system architecture and database mapping documentation.
    • Ensures that client (internal and external) needs are addressed and escalated to vendor support, program leads or upper management as needed.
    • Participates with team in continuous Quality Improvement for IT and related areas.

 

  • Special Projects:
    • Participate in process improvement projects.

 

Skills:

  • Ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Understands Software Development Life Cycle and Source Code Management.
  • Ability to develop business relationships and communicate effectively with the user community, peers and supervisors.
  • Ability to analyze and/or write design specifications and requirements.
  • Understanding of an SDLC process.
  • Strong understanding of Test Driven Development (TDD), software design patterns.
  • Working knowledge of the common issues surrounding system security and performance based design.
  • Possesses a strong understanding of software design patterns and their application in solving common business problems.
  • Maintains technical knowledge by reading publications and attending continuing education courses.
  • Knowledge of desktops, servers, printers, terminal servers, Xerox Document Management, Telecommunication, telecommunications systems, fax servers, and network devices and ability to identify problems and fixes.

 

Other Functions:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

 

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.
  • 0-5 years of development within the Healthcare Industry.
  • Working knowledge of developing within a Cache environment.
  • Working knowledge of Mumps/Cache ObjectScript/Object Oriented Programming/Data Structures.
  • Must be able to balance high quality standards with schedule pressures and demanding environment.
  • Must be a resourceful self-starter, flexible, pro-active, solution-oriented and customer-oriented.

 

Preferred

  • Working knowledge of Laboratory workflow, if applicable.
  • Working knowledge of Financial processes, if applicable.
  • One year experience in clinical or information service/technology related areas, with focus on software development, database management, data extraction and reporting.
  • One year experience in areas related to Laboratory or Hospital Information Technology preferred.

 

License Certification:

  • Certifications in Software Development Tool and/or Database Management (MCTS, MCITP, for SQL 2005, 2008, etc.) preferable

Additional Information

Physical Capabilities:
- Light to moderate physical effort (lift/carry up to 50 lbs.)
- Occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and crouching.
- Occasional carrying, pushing, and pulling of objects.
- Frequent, prolonged standing/sitting/walking.
- Extensive computer work.
