Overview

The Senior Network Engineer leads the installation, maintenance and support of the network to ensure the smooth operation with maximum performance and availability for customers. This role works with both voice and IP technology. Acts as a resource by providing network engineering support, operational support and project support for Sonic Healthcare’s converged network. Oversees the company's internal data communications systems. Plans, designs and implements local and wide-area network solutions between multiple platforms and protocols. Analyzes, troubleshoots and resolves network related issues. Analyzes and tests all elements of the network infrastructure. Designs secure networks and establishes standards based on business objectives. Performs upgrades to hardware and software as required

 

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Network Engineering:
    • Develops and maintains standard network designs for each SLA classification.
    • Develops and maintains standard router configuration.
    • Analyzes current network performance, configuration, metrics and business needs and make written recommendations for future infrastructure improvements.
    • Researches and develops new designs and technology to expand the network and improve performance and quality.
    • Compiles and presents recommendations and solutions to management.
    • Develops and defines detailed specifications for hardware and software.
    • Develops and maintains network documentation.
    • Makes road map recommendations to Manager, Network Systems.
    • Works closely with network vendors to keep up to date on new products and EOL products.
    • Works closely with Manager, Network Systems to ensure best practices are being used.
    • Applies advanced understanding of business in the development of network resources and establishment of network priorities.
    • Leads efforts to develop and provide innovative solutions to network engineering and design projects.
    • Analyzes and provides innovative solutions to network engineering and design projects.
    • Detailed understanding of network design.
    • Understanding of how sysops and CSI systems and tools interact with the network and network devices.
    • Develops network designs to optimize quality, scalability, and cost efficiency.
    • Monitors marketplace for advances in disruptive and innovative technologies.
    • Performs analyses on company’s growth to determine the impact on its network infrastructure and provide cost-effective, high quality solutions and recommendations over time.
    • Supports and implements network standards, processes and security to maintain company IT standards.
    • Creates documentation and diagrams describing the architecture and operating procedures for the network infrastructure.

 

  • Operational Support:
    • Provides tier 3 support for all Sonic Healthcare Business units.
    • Assists team members in resolving Network/Telecom issues.
    • Works with other Infrastructure teams to provide the best support possible to each business unit.
    • Mentors other team member on technology and problem resolution.
    • Works with vendors to provide support required to meet internal SLA’s
    • Serves as backup for Manager, Network Systems during paid time off.
    • Analyzes and resolves critical and exceedingly complex network related problems.
    • Expert knowledge of advanced network diagnostic tools.
    • Possesses knowledge, skills and abilities to resolve complex network related problems.
    • Serves as resource to others in resolution of highly complex problems.
    • Advanced knowledge of and ability to manage the day-to-day delivery of satisfactory network.
    • Ability to function as escalation for on-call engineers.
    • Develops, maintains and disseminates knowledge of which teams and systems are responsible for the traffic flows references above.
    • Uses advanced knowledge to troubleshoot and repair network-related problems; triage, troubleshoot, and repair system failures related to network configurations, network switching / routing, network devices, and datacenter equipment.
    • Identifies Network configuration and/or performance irregularities or anomalies, and develops procedures to respond to these irregularities in a timely manner.
    • Maintains a high level of functionality and availability of all VPNs, switching infrastructure, firewalls, wireless networks, and WAN links.
    • Coordinates with vendors for installation of local / remote site hardware and services.
    • Provides analysis, implementation, maintenance and support of a majority of enterprise-wide networking systems.
    • Installs, configures, and supports satellite networking systems.
    • Evaluates, designs, analyzes and maintains LAN / WAN for new and existing sites.
    • Installs, configures, optimizes and maintains routers and layer 2 and 3 switches along with other networking equipment.
    • Analyzes trends to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions.
    • Assist with implementation and upgrades of local and remote network systems.
    • Work with internal and external teams to implement solutions for network security.

 

  • Project Support:
    • Works with project managers to meet expectations for Network tasks.
    • Assists Manager, Network Systems in setting objectives for projects.
    • Manages large scale and business critical projects.
    • Contributes to relationships with ISPs, network equipment manufacturers, co-location providers, and peering partners.
    • Identifies potential new peering, and bandwidth partners as required to meet evolving business and technical needs.
    • Maintains and develops overall picture of team tasks, projects, initiatives, and the associated interdependencies.
    • Works across the organization to facilitate timely program and project completion.
    • Adapts communication techniques for audiences at multiple levels and with varying degrees of technical understanding; Present facts and information to negotiate mutually acceptable solutions.
    • Delegates technical tasks clearly and comfortably.
    • Communicate with non-techops teams to gather application-level requirements that may impact the network design.
    • Ability to generate detailed technical project plans involving techops and non-techops teams.
    • Presents, consults and strategizes with key stakeholders on performance improvement strategies.

 

  • Special Projects:
    • Participate in process improvement projects.

 

Skills:

  • Working knowledge of technologies such as MPLS, TCP/IP, EIGRP, BGP, QoS, SIP, H323, Wireless.
  • Demonstrated success with engineering and project implementations.
  • Advanced understanding of networking protocols and concepts.
  • Detailed understanding of inter-DC and intra-DC traffic flows.
  • Beginner-level knowledge of scripting languages.
  • Advanced knowledge of network concepts, technologies, tools and philosophies, and the ability to design an organization's network infrastructure and services.
  • Coaches others on the application of technical tools and technologies.
  • Experience with Cisco enterprise voice platforms.
  • Expert knowledge of network performance and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of network related hardware and software.
  • Advanced understanding of security issues and implications for network solutions.
  • Demonstrates an expert understanding of how the Internet works, and the associated interdependency of protocols.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School Diploma/GED and 5-10 years’ experience.
  • Solid knowledge of system development methodology, project management, system architecture an analytical/problem solving skills.
  • Must be able to balance high quality standards with schedule pressures and demanding environment.
  • Must be a resourceful self-starter, flexible, pro-active, solution-oriented and customer-oriented.

 

Preferred

  • Some college or technical school course work related to the Information Technology field a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field preferred.

 

License Certification:

  • CCNA or higher
