  • Overview

    The Lead Molecular Technologist serves as an independent senior employee responsible for monitoring the work activities of other lab technologists, training of staff, safeguarding quality operations, and monitoring for policy/regulatory compliance issues.  The Lead Molecular Technologist provides substantial administrative support to the department supervisor and also liaises with key personnel in other functional lab areas including R&D and Quality.  Assists where required in assay testing as a senior technologist/scientist performing procedures and troubleshooting tasks which are recognized as the most complex. 

    Responsibilities

    Essential Functions:

    1. Laboratory Duties (50%)
      • Serves as technical expert and liaison to vendors on various methodologies
      • Trains new employees and assesses assay performance competency
      • Mentors junior technologists and scientists
      • Demonstrates technical expertise on complex methodologies and maintains assay competency for a wide variety of assays
      • Performs high complexity clinical assay testing when required
      • Performs, enters, and maintains Quality Control data
      • Troubleshoots complex assay pipeline issues and laboratory applications
      • Signs out laboratory reports and files documentation associated with daily production runs
      • Maintains analytical instruments, schedules authorized routine service, and maintains instrument documentation
      • Monitors for quality assurance issues in day to day lab operations
      • Creates and validates in-house control materials
      • Experimentation and collaborative research with other scientific staff and leadership
      • Perform other laboratory duties as required and assigned
    2. Administrative Duties (50%)
      • Authors and revises procedures, SOPs, and various scientific and audit reports
      • Provides personnel schedule recommendations and monitors daily workload balance within the lab
      • Reviews temperature dependent equipment documentation
      • Monitors data for weekly Turn-Around-Time trends and issues
      • Assists in proficiency testing materiel processing, assignment, result entries and reports
      • Maintains supply/inventory control and builds supply order requests
      • Coordinates the materiel receiving process ensuring correct processing of reagents/supplies
      • Leads process improvement workgroups and multifaceted projects as assigned
      • Assists in completion of regulatory checklists and internal audits
      • Presents information/training at department huddles and monthly meetings
      • Monitors laboratory systems and data as assigned

    Qualifications

    Required:

    • S. degree in Medical Technology OR Chemical, Biological, or Physical Science AND six years of pertinent laboratory experience
    • OR an M.S. degree in Medical Technology or Chemical, Biological, or Physical Science AND four years of pertinent laboratory experience

     

    Preferred

    • Certified as Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Molecular Biology, or Clinical Chemistry by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) OR equivalent certification

    • Ability to interact with highly diverse technical teams and vendor representatives
    • Excellent attention to detail and ability to collect and analyze data using graphs, tables, charts, and mathematical calculations
    • Advanced computer knowledge including MS Excel, Outlook, and Word
    • Knowledge of informatics and data workflows; a demonstrated ability to work with IT and other technical personnel
    • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and fluctuations in workload
    • Experienced with clinical laboratory regulations (CLIA, CAP, NY State) and GDP policies
    • Ability to handle multiple priorities and manage stress appropriately
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

    Physical Capabilities:
     
    Physical Requirements:  This position requires some lifting, up to 50 lbs, but frequently and carrying objects up to 10 lbs. This position also requires some pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, and bending. Frequent repetitive hand and arm movement, eye-hand-foot coordination, manual dexterity, finger dexterity, balance, depth perception, hearing acuity, color vision, and near and far vision acuity are also required.
     
    Environmental Demands: Works in temperature controlled environment with occasional exposure to biological and chemical hazards.  
     
    Hazards: Exposure to toxic/caustic/chemicals/detergents. Exposure to moving mechanical parts. Exposure to communicable diseases. Exposure to blood borne pathogens. Gaseous exposure risk.
